Psychological and emotional support

The fertility journey can be challenging and emotionally stressful. Fortunately, at Procrea, you will never be alone. Our network of affiliated specialists can support you throughout your fertility journey.

In some situations, such as if you are undergoing IUI and IVF, we schedule a meeting with a psychologist/psychiatrist who specializes in fertility. This meeting is the perfect opportunity to discuss anything that concerns you before starting your treatment.

Alternative treatments

Are you interested in incorporating alternative health care, such as acupuncture and nutritional monitoring, into your journey? Tell us what your needs are and we will be able to guide you.

Healthy lifestyle

There are several factors that can have a significant impact on your fertility. Some are genetic, while others are influenced by your environment and lifestyle. By paying attention to the factors you can control, such as diet, physical activity, and tobacco and alcohol consumption, you can put the odds in your favor.

The weight

Weight can affect fertility. Both underweight and overweight people can show signs of hormonal imbalance and suffer from ovulation problems.

Additionally, studies show that fertility treatments are less effective in people with insulin resistance, a phenomenon that can be observed in individuals with a high body mass index (BMI). Overweight men also have lower testosterone levels and produce less sperm, which can affect their fertility.

Diet

According to studies, a Mediterranean diet, low in sugar and rich in whole foods, can promote hormonal balance, increase the chances of conceiving and help achieve a healthy weight.

This type of diet is particularly recommended for people with high insulin levels or suffering from ovulation problems such as polycystic ovarian syndrome. If necessary, we can give you weight and diet recommendations during your meetings with us.

Caffeine

Some studies show that excessive caffeine consumption can increase the risk of miscarriage. We recommend sticking to one or two cups per day.

Tobacco

Smoking and breathing secondhand smoke can negatively impact eggs and sperm. Smoking can also increase the risk of miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, and, according to some studies, can double the risk of infertility.

The alcohol

Throughout the fertility journey, it is important to limit alcohol consumption, for both men and women. Alcohol can cause hormonal and ovulatory abnormalities in addition to reducing the chances of conceiving. Recommended limits vary, but we suggest two drinks per week for women and four drinks for men.

Drugs

Recreational drugs such as cannabis and cocaine can negatively impact fertility. Some prescribed drugs, such as chemotherapy drugs or steroids, can also affect fertility in both men and women.

Temperature

An increase in temperature around the testicles and scrotum, for example from a hot bath, sauna, cycling or a long car journey, can impair sperm production.

Sexual intercourse

It is recommended to have intercourse two to four times a week to promote sperm production and increase the chances of conception. If you use lubricant, avoid petroleum jelly-based products which can be toxic to sperm.

Vitamins

Taking a multivitamin can significantly reduce the risk of certain birth defects. We recommend that women take folic acid and that men take zinc supplements. Vitamins C and E, selenium and L-Carnitine are also recommended for everyone.

The medication

Be sure to talk to your doctor and our entire team about any medications you are taking, whether prescription or over-the-counter. These could be related to your fertility issues.
